David Landreth, the Elder, was born in 1752 in Northumberland County in England. He came to America just before the end of the century and like Bernard M'Mahon settled in Philadelphia. He also established a seed and nursery business. The seedhouse was the earliest one established in America. As was the case with M'Mahon he soon found that his business established in the heart of Philadelphia had to be moved out into the suburbs. The raising of seeds and trees took considerable land. A branch store was established in Charleston, South Carolina where the younger Landreth born in 1802 became branch manager. This South Carolina store continued until it was confiscated by the Confederate States in 1862.
